Treatments
Low-Dose Rate Brachytherapy (LDR)
Low-Dose Rate Brachytherapy (LDR) involves the placement of small radioactive seeds (5x1mm) directly inside the tumor, using a minimally invasive procedure. The seeds can remain permanently (e.g., in prostate cancer or brain tumors) or temporarily (e.g., in retinal tumors), delivering the dose over several days or months. They are implanted through needles under imaging guidance and according to a predetermined plan with interactive dosimetry to achieve the desired dose distribution. For example, localized prostate cancer can be treated in a couple of hours without major surgery, resulting in equivalent tumor control and fewer side effects. Patients can return to their usual activities within a couple of days without requiring a urinary catheter.
